The old part of the city of Marrakech is referred to as the Medina and this region in surrounded by high walls that were once built to protect the inhabitants.
The Marrakech medina was not built based on a precise urban plan but on the contrary. You will find hundreds of tiny streets and alley ways all leading to the souks with its many artisan shops. Almost all of the Riads in Marrakech are situated in and around the famous Jemaa el Fna Square and its souks therefore, not needing a car to get around.
